It’s almost impossible to talk about the cycles that we experience without first addressing the main cycle of them all- the life cycle. Biologically, the life stages of a typical woman are divided into infancy, puberty (adolescence), sexual maturation (reproductive age), climacteric period, and post-climacteric (elderly) years. During each stage, women experience many changes including hormones, emotions, and life events. These changes can have a major impact on your mind, body, and spirit.
Let’s look at each life cycle:
Infancy: The infancy cycle is the period of life between birth and the acquisition of language, approximately one to two years later. Although the infant does not appear to be anything but a helpless creature, it is born with many of the reflexes that are critical to survival. These natural reflexes are unlearned and involuntary and will develop with the infant as part of it’s ongoing maturation.
Puberty: In his life cycle theory, psychologist Erick Erickson stated that a human being establishes his or her identity during this period. In females, the age of the first menstruation usually fluctuates around 12 to 13 years of age, although many young girls are having their cycle at an earlier age. This could be due to a lot of reasons, including hormones, GMO foods, etc.
Sexual Maturation (reproductive age): This cycle occurs between late teens and premenopause in the late 40s. Emotionally, the first half of this stage is about building relationships and establishing an identity.
Climacteric Period: Climacteric is the cycle of life starting from the decline in ovarian activity until after the end of ovarian function. It is typically 5 years before and after menopause. Menopause occurs when no menstruation is present for 12 months.
Post-Climactic Period: In this cycle, ovarian function is almost at its end. People in this cycle often experience feelings of loss; loss of friends, physical strength, and memory. They could also experience increased levels of anxiety as they try to navigate this new time.
By understanding (and honoring) and honoring each phase, we are better able to align ourselves and flow with the natural order instead of fighting against it.
